Information about driving in Australia
If you are travelling to Australia and are considering driving then you must make sure that you have a valid drivers license. If you hold a current driving license from your country, and that license is in English you are allowed to drive throughout Australia.
If you hold a license which is not in English you may need a translation and may also require an international license.
Make sure you carry your license when driving and it is valid prior to your departure. An international driver's permit is not sufficient by itself and must be accompanied by a valid driver's permit. Australia and New Zealand drive on the left-hand side of the road, with the steering wheel located on the right-hand side of the car.
The maximum speed limit in cities and towns is 50 kilometers an hour. Scholl zone areas have a 40 kilometers an hour limit during school hours. On country roads and highways, the maximum speed is usually 110 kilometers an hour.
Strict drink-driving laws apply throughout Australia and random breath testing (RBT’s) are common practice. The law requires drivers and passengers to always wear seat belts. Motorcycle riders and cyclists must wear a helmet at all times.
Personal injury or damage to the vehicle or property of a third party is generally covered by compulsory insurance. In the event of an accident, an ‘excess’ payment may apply. Personal accident insurance is also available. The minimum age is 21 years and a surcharge may be imposed for drivers under 25 years.
